Storage mistakes that ruin batteries

How to read dates and codes
Most alkaline batteries have a year and month printed on the wrapper, like 2028-09. Coin cells often show a 4-digit code; the first two are the year, the next two are the month.
Rechargeable cells do not have printed expiry dates. Track their recharge cycles here instead. A typical NiMH cell lasts about 300 to 500 full cycles.
Disposal and safety
Most single-use batteries can go to local recycling drop points, but rules vary by area. Rechargeable cells should never go in household trash because they contain metals that can harm the environment.
